A girl and her giant: A BFG Review

the_bfg

My family and I had the chance to attend the screening of The BFG, and let me tell you…I was worried, book adaptations can be pretty tricky specially the meaningful ones, those that pull the strings of your heart and take you to another time in your life. To me books and music are such important parts of my life, each chapter of my life has it’s own soundtrack and a book to go with it.

The BFG is one of those, so many quotes bring me to that warm and fuzzy place where my overactive imagination can rejoice and my wildest dreams are obtainable.

“The witching hour, somebody had once whispered to her, was a special moment in the middle of the night when every child and every grown-up was in a deep deep sleep, and all the dark things came out from hiding and had the world all to themselves.”
― Roald Dahl, The BFG

“Meanings is not important, said the BFG. I cannot be right all the time. Quite often I is left instead of right.” ― Roald Dahl, The BFG

Still to this day, I get the heebie-jeebies when I so happen to wake up in the middle of the night at 3 a.m. Lol, silly me….

And my fascination for Dahl’s little jewel became even more meaningful when my 10 year old read it at school. Now my baby can be my reading partner, someone I can discuss some of the books that helped shape the woman I am today.

But the more I heard about the film, the more excited I got. Until the day we went to watch Finding Dory and watched the preview of The BFG, in my awe, I didn’t realized until it was over that tears were running down my cheek. Yes, I’m a weirdo that apparently even cries with previews.

So when we got invited to the screening I was over the moon, oh and the kids too! 😉 The BFG although with much smaller ears, was beautiful! His expressions, the way he spoke, everything about him reminded me of the little girl  who wished she was plucked away from her bed by a Big Friendly Giant.

The special and digital effects are exquisite, when we see The BFG “at work” collecting dreams, the willow and the “dreams” floating around are astonishing. It was truly magical, and the genius of Spielberg comes through beautifully.

Disney-The-BFG

For any of you concerned they might not do Roald Dahl’s work justice, rest assured that you’ll leave the theater feeling content and maybe slightly teary if you’re anything like me. Like most great movies, The BFG has a good amount of laughter, adventure, heartfelt moments, all combined with amazing effects and beautiful imagery.

Have you watched it? What did you think? And if you haven’t….. what are you waiting for?

Disney unveils first poster for The BFG, directed by Steven Spielberg!!!

From the creators of E.T. and the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda comes THE BFG!

The BFG (Mark Rylance), while a giant himself, is a Big Friendly Giant and nothing like the other inhabitants of Giant Country. Standing 24-feet tall with enormous ears and a keen sense of smell, he is endearingly dim-witted and keeps to himself for the most part. Giants like Bloodbottler (Bill Hader) and Fleshlumpeater (Jemaine Clement) on the other hand, are twice as big and at least twice as scary and have been known to eat humans, while the BFG prefers Snozzcumber and Frobscottle. Upon her arrival in Giant Country, Sophie, a precocious 10-year-old girl from London, is initially frightened of the mysterious giant who has brought her to his cave, but soon comes to realize that the BFG is actually quite gentle and charming, and, having never met a giant before, has many questions. The BFG brings Sophie to Dream Country where he collects dreams and sends them to children, teaching her all about the magic and mystery of dreams.

THE BFG hits theaters everywhere on July 1, 2016, the year that marks the 100th anniversary of Dahl’s birth.

Avengers Age of Ultron Review

With a few exceptions sequels are never as good as the first one and I’m sure if you watched the first installment of the Avengers you would agree that that was pretty hard to beat. Avengers: Age of Ultron was action packed, funny and engaging and it definitely lived up and exceeded my expectations.

If you haven’t watched any of the trailers leading up to this movie, here’s one to get your interested spiked up:

Avengers: Age of Ultron also shows us a very different side to both Hulk and Black Widow with a romantic interest developing between the two. Which by the way was I the only one that saw that coming?! I’m actually glad they took enough time on the subject and the idea that love can tame even the angriest of monsters is always amusing to me. Hey! maybe I’m just a sucker for the whole Beauty and the Beast plot twist 😉

Another part I loved was getting to see more of Hawkeye’s private life. Yes, he’s a badass with a bow and arrow and his aim is INSANE! But it was pretty cool for Mavel/Disney to humanize him and show us a completely different side of him (specially for those of us who thought he and Black Widow had something going on) We get to meet his wife and children who live in no other than a farmhouse in the middle of nowhere and exposes a softer side of this hunkwith a bow.

Oh! and the geeky girl in me rejoiced by the introduction of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch how cool are they?! Am I the only one that was always fascinated with the underdogs?!

And once again Stan Lee’s cameo was AMAZING as expected, don’t you just love him? How cool is he?

Overall I loved the movie, but again I’m a geeky girl. I loves the human aspects, the new characters and the usual fast paced action that keeps you at the edge of your seat. Even though the movie is a whole 2 hours long!

New Cinderella Live Action Review

I first heard about the new live action Cinderella movie from the Christian Loubouitin ad. Honestly I was dumbfounded Cinderella has always been one of my favorite movies and although I was sure Disney would do it justice, I know we live in a completely different era than the one when the animated film came out. Also, a leap from animation into live action isn’t always smooth nor successful.

This week, I had the opportunity to see the live action version of Cinderella at an advanced press screening. I thought the re-telling of the classic fairy tale was done beautifully. I really appreciated the time spent on Ella’s background and the character development, specially the time spent getting to know her mother. The film did not shy away from the emotional turmoils in Cinderella’s childhood, and kept her mothers memory very much alive through her message to have courage and to be kind.

Lily James and Richard Madden are real life royalty, they are both immensely gorgeous and the dance sequence was magical and amazing. I was a bit wary about that specific scene since it’s so meaningful to the film but once again Disney has proven to they can make everything amazing!

Helena Bonham Carter is a beautiful and ever so clumsy fairy godmother and her rendition of Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo through the elegant orchestra score took me way back to my childhood, to a time when I though I was also a Disney princess. If you are curious about a bonus after the credits, there isn’t one; but I suggest hanging around for the credits to hear Helen Bonham Carter’s rendition of Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo which is also included on the soundtrack. Oh! and the new version of a Dream is a wish your heart makes is tear worthy. Perhaps I just have a strong bond to Cinderella 😉

Frozen Fever

I was super excited about the new short Frozen Fever! And let me tell you it did not disappoint. I am sure there will be a fair percentage of movie goers who are just headed out to see Cinderella for the new Frozen Fever short that is attached. It was super funny and in true Disney short fashion it delivered a lot more than expected. The new song, Making Today a Perfect Day, with Anna & Elsa was very cute and I’m sure will be a huge hit with little girls.

Disclamer: I was given free Press Passes to watch the film, I was not compensated to write the review or watch the movie. All opinions are my own.
