When my now 11 year old was 15 months, he fell backwards in the living room and hit his head on the base board. I picked him up thinking it was just another fall, I put my hand behind the back of his head and it was wet, a little too wet. When I pulled my hand back it was completely red, full of blood. Obviously I panicked, first time mom, my tiny son barely a toddler. So I did the most logical thing to me at the moment… call 911. They were really fast, a nice perk of living in the city. When the police car, ambulance and EMT arrived I was beyond overwhelmed, seeing all the lights and emergency vehicles only reassured my suspicion my baby was in serious peril. After they examine his and dressed the wound, well not wound it turned out to be a tiny cut. But apparently the head bleeds, A LOT! The paramedic obviously trying really hard to not hate me or judge me for being ridiculous told me head injuries bleed a lot and if the same thing was to ever happen again to make sure to clean the wound to be able to assess size and depth.
Now why am I telling you this story? Accidents are scary and as a parent we are supposed to be strong and stay cool and collected. But that's easier said than done. If you're baby has a high fever, they were stung by a bee, they have a tummy ache or any other illness that simple can not wait for the morning when their doctors office open but it's not a true emergency. What do you do? Usually you call the on call nurse, who can't really help you much or just makes an appointment for the next day (as long as it's not a holiday or weekend) Not really anything to help you stay at ease. Or you can take them to the ER and pay a gazillion dollars, be in a room with God knows how many germs and viruses and doing all that with a very upset kid that's not feeling their best. Sounds awful doesn't it? Well, what if I told you there's a way to see a doctor from the comfort of your own home, no matter the time, day or reason.
Amwell is the nation’s largest telehealth company. What exactly does that mean? It means you can have access to an array of health care professionals from your own home. All their professionals are board-certified, licensed doctors, and they are ready to help you no matter the time, date or place. You can access Amwell from a desktop, tablet or on your phone. They are here to help, from minor illnesses and injuries, general health and wellness concerns, prescription refills, to chronic condition management. As a person with a chronic illness, I can’t tell you how important this is too me. Sometimes it takes days to hear back from my doctor for a simple question or a prescription refill. Amwell doctors are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and are dedicated to keeping you healthy, all from the comfort of your home.
I can't tell you how many times I wished I had a service like this. All the unnecessary ER trips, the expensive bills. How about the prescription you need while you're out of town and either ran out or left it at home? But the office is closed or it takes days for someone to get back to you. How about the all broken toes and fingers I've had in the last couple years? I know! I'm getting clumsier as I age. Do you know what they do to broken fingers and toes? Absolutely nothing! A splint and some ibuprofen, that's it! But I still had to pay the visits, exam and x-rays. Just to get a Popsicle stick and some bandages. With Amwellyou can do all of that from home.
